Targeting hospitals in Ukraine is a "war crime," a senior UN official tells an emergency meeting of the Security Council, called in the wake of deadly strikes that Kyiv blamed on Russia. "Intentionally directing attacks against a protected hospital is a war crime and perpetrators must be held to account," says Joyce Msuya, acting under-secretary for humanitarian affairs. SOUNDBITE
Images show air defence intercepting nighttime drone attacks and smoke rising above the city in Lviv, Ukraine, the day after the attacks. According to Lviv mayor Andriy Sadovyi three warehouses were destroyed and one person was killed. Ukraine says its air defence systems had downed 27 Shahed drones launched overnight in Russia's latest aerial barrage. "A total of 30 attack UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) were launched... As a result of combat work, 27 Shaheds were shot down by air defence units," the Ukrainian air force said on social media. IMAGES
"Wherever we've seen Wagner operate in the past, we've seen death and destruction follow in their wake," says US Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller. The EU believes Russia's missile attacks on civilians in Ukraine "amounts to a war crime," according to a spokesman for the bloc, after Russian forces carried out a wave of strikes on Ukraine cities that killed at least five people and knocked out energy infrastructure nationwide. SOUNDBITE
