Firefighters battle a a huge wildfire on the Spanish holiday island of Tenerife that has forced the evacuation of thousands of people and has so far destroyed more than 3,800 hectares (9,400 acres) of land, according to the regional government. The fire, which broke out late on Tuesday, has been raging through a forested area with steep ravines in the northeastern part of the island which is part of the Spanish archipelago that lies off the coast of northwestern Africa. "The era of global boiling has arrived," United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says in remarks at the UN headquarters. "The air is unbreathable, the heat is unbearable, and the level of fossil fuel profits and climate inaction is unacceptable." SOUNDBITE
People walk on the Puerta del Sol, a public square, in Madrid where the temperature is nearing 40 degrees Celsius, as Spain issues hot weather red alerts for three regions due to the "extreme" danger posed by scorching temperatures. Weather agency Aemet said temperatures would hit highs between 38 degrees Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) and 42 degrees across much of the drought-stricken country. The heat is expected to be even worse in the eastern regional of Catalonia, Aragon and the Balearic Islands where thermometers could reach 44 degrees Celsius. IMAGES
