Fires in Greece this summer will burn an area of at least 150,000 hectares (370,600), the Greek prime minister says including a large fire in the north which has been burning for nearly two weeks. The area ravaged by fires "will exceed 1,500,000,000 square metres (150,000 hectares)... the most serious one was the one at Dadia forest", says Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, referring to the forest fire that the EU has branded the largest ever recorded in the bloc. On the outskirts of the Greek capital of Athens, firefighting helicopters drop water on blazes as they struggle to tame deadly wildfires burning through the country for a sixth day. So far, 20 people have been killed in the blazes. IMAGES
Flames spread unchecked for a fifth day across Greece. A forest fire in Avantas village, north of Alexandroupoli, killed eighteen suspected migrants, as the overall death toll hits 20. The unprecedented fire also spread to Dikella village, near Alexandroupoli. IMAGES

Images show an area near the village of Navi on the Greek island of Rhodes left charred by wildfires, which have raged around the country for weeks. Hundreds of firefighters backed by European Union reinforcements have been struggling to contain the flames on Rhodes, as well as on the islands of Corfu and Evia, in addition to a new front that erupted on July 26 in central Greece.
