Firefighters battle a a huge wildfire on the Spanish holiday island of Tenerife that has forced the evacuation of thousands of people and has so far destroyed more than 3,800 hectares (9,400 acres) of land, according to the regional government. The fire, which broke out late on Tuesday, has been raging through a forested area with steep ravines in the northeastern part of the island which is part of the Spanish archipelago that lies off the coast of northwestern Africa. A wildfire in the northern part of Tenerife island, affecting parts of the municipalities of Arafo and Candelaria, was approximately 130 hectares in size. According to the local authorities, it is a "complicated" area, and the main goal is to slow the advance of the fire towards inhabited areas. A number of villages have been evacuated as a precaution.
