Ukraine is evacuating thousands after the dam's destruction unleashed a torrent of water, inundating two dozen villages and the city of Kherson. Ukraine's top diplomat calls for the UN Security Council to convene an emergency meeting following the partial destruction of the strategically important Russian-held Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine. "Ukraine calls an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council and brings the issue of the Russian terrorist act to the International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors," Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba says in a statement. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg says a delay in passing new US aid for Ukraine was already hurting Kyiv's forces on the battlefield against Russia. "We see the impact already of the fact that the US has not been able to make a decision, but I expect the US to be able to make a decision, that the Congress and the House of Representatives will agree continued support to Ukraine," Stoltenberg tells journalists at a meeting of the alliance's defence ministers in Brussels. Crosses are placed outside Brazil's National Congress in Brasilia in a tribute to the victims of the Brumadinho dam collapse on the fifth anniversary of the tragedy. January 25 marks five years of the rupture of the dam at the Corrego do Feijao Mine, owned by the mining company Vale. It was holding more than 11 million cubic meters (nearly three billion gallons) of mining waste when it collapsed, unleashing a brown sea of sludge. IMAGES
Images show large cracks and holes that have emerged in road and pavement surfaces in the southwestern Icelandic town of Grindavik as the threat of a volcanic eruption looms. The town, home to around 4,000 people, was evacuated on Saturday after magma shifting under the Earth's crust caused hundreds of earthquakes. The area is now only accessible under police escort.
