Protesting farmers set fire to tyres and block roads with their tractors on the sidelines of a meeting of European agriculture ministers in Brussels. Farmers across the continent have been protesting for weeks over what they say are excessively restrictive environmental rules, competition from cheap imports from outside the European Union and low incomes. The US Federal Reserve is prepared to raise interest rates higher -- and hold them there -- in order to bring down elevated inflation. "We are prepared to raise rates further if appropriate, and intend to hold policy at a restrictive level until we are confident that inflation is moving sustainably down toward our objective," says Jerome Powell in a central banking conference in Wyoming.
