The Russian mercenary group Wagner claims to have taken control of Bakhmut's city hall and centre.
The head of Russia's Wagner mercenary group claims the complete capture of the east Ukrainian town of Bakhmut, scene of the longest and bloodiest battle in Moscow's offensive. "Today around mid-day, Bakhmut was taken in its entirety," Yevgeny Prigozhin says in a video posted on Telegram, with fighters behind him holding the Russian flag surrounded by ruins.
The head of the Russian private army Wagner claimed Saturday his forces had taken control of the city of Bakhmut after the longest and most grinding battle of the war in Ukraine. But Kyiv officials have denied it.
The battle for the strategically important industrial city has been going on since the summer and has led to great destruction and heavy losses on both sides.
The head of Russia's mercenary group Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said early Wednesday his fighters had taken control of Ukraine's city of Soledar after intense fighting this week, but said some "urban battles" continued. FRANCE 24's Gulliver Cragg reports from Kyiv, Ukraine.
