"Ukraine is fighting for the ideals of Europe" says Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, while on a symbolic visit to Kyiv on May 9, to mark Europe Day. Speaking alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Von der Leyen accuses Russian President Vladimir Putin of "attempting to destroy" European values with his invasion of Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden promises increased arms deliveries for Ukraine during a surprise visit to Kyiv in which he also vowed Washington's "unflagging commitment" in defending Ukraine's territorial integrity. "Together we've committed nearly 700 tanks and thousands of armoured vehicles, 1,000 artillery systems... and that doesn't count the other half a billion dollars we're announcing with you today and tomorrow that's going to be coming your way," Biden tells his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky. At a time of grave consequence, a wartime leader crossed the Atlantic to arrive at a White House decked in holiday decor to consult with the American president about a war in Europe. The moment was Dec. 22, 1941, as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill landed near Washington to meet with President Franklin D. Roosevelt just weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Almost 81 years later to the day, the pageantry of that trip was echoed on Wednesday as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived for a surprise visit with President Joe Biden and an address to Congress. President Zelenskiy told the US Congress that aid to Ukraine was an investment in democracy and "not charity" as he invoked American battles against the Nazis in World War Two to press for more assistance for his country's war effort.
