Images released by the Ukrainian Presidency show President Volodymyr Zelensky in the trenches clad in a helmet and bulletproof vest handing out awards to Ukrainian soldiers and shaking their hands as he visits the country's eastern frontline. Fears in Kiev are mounting that Russia is preparing to invade its south-western neighbour. Ex-Soviet Ukraine has been fighting pro-Russia separatists in its eastern Lugansk and Donetsk regions since 2014, shortly after Moscow seized Crimea.
In Majdal Shams, a Druze village in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, people are stocking up on water and food as concerns grow that the Israel-Hamas war will spill over into border areas with Syria and Lebanon. Since Hamas militants stormed over the Gaza border into Israel on 7 October, exchanges of fire have intensified on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon and the Syrian-controlled parts of the Golan Heights.

Despite the promises of Belarusian President, Alexander Lukashenko, that his forces will not join Russia's military intervention in Ukraine, concerns over mobilisation have grown. The country currently hosts an unspecified number of Russia's troops and allowed Moscow to use its territory to launch its special operation in February last year.
