Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva's supporters are celebrating his narrow election victory in Brazil but there is tension in the air over Jair Bolsonaro's silence
While President Donald Trump busies himself with his apoplectic rejection of Joe Biden as president-elect, world leaders have swiftly moved on. In a sign of Biden's legitimacy, leaders of major democracies have stepped up to congratulate the President-elect Joe Biden in recent days. Doubtless salt to his wound, Trump's favorite network--Fox News--and media outlets across the board have also declared Biden the projected winner of the election. Business Insider reports that as a whole, EU leaders and even Israel and Turkey have congratulated Biden. Only Russia's Vladimir Putin, China's Xi Xing Ping, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro have yet to join in.
Only a few weeks after his supporters stormed the seat of his country's government, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Friday expressed bafflement at how he could have lost October's election.
"I am as sad as you are, but we have to keep our heads on straight," says Brazilian outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro after he asked protesters to unblock the highways. The far-right leaders' supporters are rallying in front of military installations in Brazil's major cities and have blocked highways in more than half the country's states.
Supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro gather in front of the Brazilian Armed Forces headquarters in the capital Brasilia after his election defeat to call for military intervention after the victory of leftist Lula da Silva at the polls. In a speech that lasted just over two minutes, the far-right incumbent neither acknowledged defeat nor congratulated Lula on his victory. IMAGES
