French citizens head to the polls for the first round of voting for the next president. Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron are the favourites to reach the next round.
French President Emmanuel Macron's centrist alliance was in danger of falling short of a majority after a first round of parliamentary elections on Sunday that saw a surge in support for a new leftwing coalition. Macron's "Ensemble" (Together) alliance ran neck-and-neck with new leftwing coalition NUPES in Sunday's first round, with both scoring around 25-26 percent of the popular vote. Data Scientist Rémi Louf gives his perspective.
The French parliamentary election's opening round on Sunday saw President Emmanuel Macron's Ensemble coalition take a slight lead, with 25.75% of the popular vote, compared with 25.66% for the leftist bloc of Jean-Luc Melenchon.
Hydroalcoholic gel, a maximum of three people inside at any one time and the systematic disinfection of the electronic voting board after each voter: in Mulhouse, which saw the first coronavirus outbreak in France, exceptional health measures are put in place as voters begin to vote in the second round of the municipal elections. FRENCH AND INTERNATIONAL PAPERS - Mon. 12.06.2017 : A "Masterstroke," "The Macron wave," "On the move toward a crushing majority." However they describe it, papers agree that the landslide victory of the president's party is impressive - until one takes into account the 50 percent abstention rate. With "abstention everywhere, opposition nowhere," papers on the left worry that French voters have cleared the way for a total Macron takeover.
