At least 63 Russian soldiers have reportedly been killed after an attack on a deployment centre in the occupied Donetsk region.
The eastern Ukrainian village of Kamyanka, on the outskirts of Izyum, used to be home to 1,200 people. But after months of war and occupation by Russian forces, when Ukrainian soldiers recaptured the village in September, just 15 residents remained. One family managed to survive in the midst of heavy fighting and near total destruction.
Igor Konashenkov, spokesperson for the Russian Defence Ministry, says that 265 Ukrainian soldiers, including several dozen wounded, surrendered at the besieged Azovstal steel plant in Ukraine's port city of Mariupol. "Over the past 24 hours, 265 militants laid down their arms and surrendered, including 51 heavily wounded," Igor Konashenkov, the Russian Defence Ministry spokesman, says in a briefing.
Russia's defence ministry says that more than a thousand Ukrainian soldiers have surrendered in Mariupol, a strategic port city in eastern Ukraine that has been besieged by Moscow's troops for over a month.
Kyiv has been bracing for a full-on Russian assault, but Moscow's forces have stalled as they try to encircle the city with a pre-war population of 3.5 million people. FRANCE 24's James André reports from central Kyiv.
