Britain and the European Union failed on Wednesday to agree any solutions to ease post-Brexit trade with Northern Ireland, in a standoff that is not only deepening mistrust between the two sides but could also cloud a weekend international summit. Since Britain completed a tortuous exit from the EU late last year, its relations with Brussels have soured further, with both sides accusing each other of bad faith over a part of their trade deal that covers goods movements to Northern Ireland. FRANCE 24's Dave Keating tells us more.
Last December, the UK struck a deal with the EU to keep Gibraltar in the Schengen area, just hours before Brexit was due to come into force. Now that deal is set to expire by the end of June.
The political debate over Brexit is continuing, with the draft divorce deal uncertain to pass in Westminster. One of the biggest sticking points in the talks was the position of Northern Ireland and how to prevent the reintroduction of a border with the Republic of Ireland, while also avoiding divergence from the rest of the UK. Northern Irish businesses are watching these developments very closely. We hear from Stephen Kelly, chief executive of the lobby group Manufacturing Northern Ireland.
