With the 60th anniversary of the Evian accords that ended the bloodshed signed on March 18, 1962, we look at how the ghosts of Algeria's war of independence from France still haunt both countries, six decades on.
In tonight's edition: Sixty years ago today French and Algerian officials inked a peace deal, the Evian Accords, bringing the end to an 8 year war, and paving the way for Algerian independence. A 19 year old says she was raped by Sudanese security forces on the sidelines of a protest. Rights groups fear sexual violence is being used as a weapon of war. And we bring you a report on Ugandan efforts to track down the ADF islamist militia.
It's been exactly six decades since the ink was signed on the Évian Accords, an agreement aimed at ending an almost eight-year conflict that claimed the lives of more than 300,000 Algerians. But France is still struggling to come to terms with its colonial and wartime legacy in Algeria. We're joined for Perspective by historian Jim House, lecturer and head of research for French at the University of Leeds in the UK.
With the 60th anniversary of the Evian accords, we look at France’s poisonous legacy in Algeria. The former occupier was allowed to continue its nuclear tests in the Algerian Sahara until 1967, and de Gaulle managed to negotiate a secret deal with the new Algerian state to allow chemical weapons tests until 1978.
On March 22, 1963, the Beatles released their first album "Please Please Me", rocketing the foursome to international fame. Six decades on, we look at how Beatlemania transformed Liverpool, the northern English town where it all began. We also head to Deauville, Normandy for a diverse collection of work from renowned Vogue photographer Irving Penn. Meanwhile, our team in Dakar has been speaking with 89-year-old Senegalese photographer Adama Sylla, who spent decades capturing stunning images of his hometown, Saint-Louis. After almost a lifetime of flying under the international radar, his work is being shown in Paris for the first time.
