According to Business Insider, Google doubled its capital expenditure. The company spent $25.8 billion in 2018. That included spending on offices and tech infrastructure. Its cloud unit also got the lion's share of new hires in the quarter, the CFO of parent company Alphabet said. Google said it launched its 18th Google Cloud region in the fourth quarter and pointed to plans for continued expansion in the US and abroad. Amazon spent $11.3 billion cash on capex in 2018, split between fulfillment operations and AWS. And Microsoft said it spent $16 billion.
Amazon is a giant in e-commerce, and it’s throwing its weight around today. In an email to marketplace sellers, Amazon says it will stop sales of streaming devices from Apple and Google by October 29. They don’t work with Amazon Instant Video. According to the email, the sales ban covers the Apple TV, Chromecast, and Nexus Player. “Over the last three years, Prime Video has become an important part of Prime. It’s important that the streaming media players we sell interact well with Prime Video in order to avoid customer confusion. Roku, XBOX, PlayStation and Fire TV are excellent choices.”
