The head of the European Council has defended the EU's stance and called for calm amid heightened tensions in the post-Brexit trade talks.
China warns countries to stay out of domestic affairs, after Australia said it was actively considering offering safe haven to Hong Kong residents and the UK announced it could offer residency to Hong Kong citizens, as Beijing Parliament approved the controversial new “security law” for Hong Kong on Tuesday. In the following day, hundreds of arrests were made in the territory as protests were held to mark the 23rd anniversary of the handover from British to Chinese rule.
Germany and the rest of the EU aim to reduce the negative impact of the UK's 'Brexit' referendum result to their economies, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told a news conference in Berlin on Tuesday. Merkel said the EU would wait until the government of Prime-Minister-to-be Theresa May has decided on its approach to the UK's relationship with the EU.
