President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris' have chosen a Covid-19 transition advisory board. The newly appointed team is led by established public health officials and staffed by doctors and government officials. The board is co-chaired by former FDA Commissioner Dr. David Kessler, former Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy and Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith. According to CNN, Dr. Marcells Nunez-Smith is a Yale associate professor of medicine and epidemiology. Also on the advisory board are well-known medical figures, including Dr. Zeke Emanuel, and Dr. Atul Gawand. Rounding out the board's expertise is Rick Bright, who led the government's production and purchase of vaccines.

The US Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services released new dietary guidelines on Tuesday. The guidelines are updated every five years and govern what's served in federal nutrition programs. UPI reports the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee recommend that Americans reduce salt and saturated fat levels in their diet. What's more, the panel suggested the government revise its definition of 'moderate drinking' for me from two drinks per day down to one. As for sugar consumption, the panel continues to advise people to not consume more than 10 percent of their calories from added sugars.
When COVID-19 reached the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Protection tracked data related to its spread. However, President Donald Trump's coronavirus task force wrested control from the CDC, with the launch of HHS Protect. The main pandemic data tracking system is run by the Department of Health and Human Services. Federal and state officials use HHS Protect’s data to assess the burden of disease across the country and allocate scarce resources, from medicines to PPE. The problem is, HHS Protect’s data often diverge dramatically from those collected by other sources, including hospitals, states, and federal agencies. And according to Science Magazine, the data also varies from the apparent reality on the ground. A CDC internal analysis completed this month shows HHS Protect's data problems are a national problem. A former public affairs official of the US Department of Health and Human Services pressured the CDC to alter a report on the risk of COVID-19 to children. Specifically, the editorial staff was pushed to alter epidemiological data on COVID-19's impact on children. The novel coronavirus is estimated to have infected at least 7.43 million people in the US and has killed nearly 210,000 of them. Paul Alexander wrote in emails to the editor-in-chief of the CDC’s epidemiological digest—the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report—on Sept. 11th, 2020. He ordered changes that would downplay the risks to students and faculty if schools return to in-person classes, as President Donald Trump has demanded. The requested changes seemed designed to convey a lower level of risk to students if Trump’s orders were acted on. One former CDC official described Alexander making contact at all with the journal’s staff as highly 'unusual.' That's because the CDC and its journal are supposed to be insulated from external interference.
