In less than three months, Israel expects to have immunized all its citizens who are over 16 against the novel coronavirus. Business Insider reports achieving that goal would likely make Israel the world's first to immunize the vast majority of its population. Israel has far outpaced the rest of the world with its vaccination campaign. In fact, it has already administered the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to about one in five of its citizens. Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu announced a deal with Pfizer to secure enough doses to immunize its adult population by the end of March.
Rio de Janeiro, Nov 12 (EFE), (Camera: Janaína Quinet).- The growing dominance of militias here in Brazil's second city is casting a shadow over campaigning as voters in more than 5,500 cities and towns across Brazil prepare to go to the polls Sunday to elect mayors and councilors. The militias, largely made up of active-duty and former cops and soldiers, originated during the 1964-1985 military regime, but carved out a new role for themselves in the 1990s as "security providers" in the poorest favelas (shantytowns) of Rio de Janeiro. Some residents saw the militias as needed to counter the drug-trafficking gangs that embedded themselves in the favelas, while others bristled at the depredations of the "protectors," who typically establish monopolies over the provision of basic services and use that control to jack-up prices and rates.FOOTAGE OF RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL.
Rio de Janeiro, May 8 (EFE), (Camera: Dhavid Miranda/Antonio Lacerda).- In Rio de Janeiro, hospitals are collapsing amidst hundreds of patients waiting for care. The harsh reality has hit the favelas, where the poorest live, as many die in the waiting line for an Intensive Care Unit. The crisis that the iconic Brazilian city has been experiencing for years is more severe amid the COVID-19 pandemic.FOOTAGE OF ALESSANDRA ROCHA, DEPUTY HEALTH COORDINATOR OF THE CITY OF RIO:TRANSLATION: "MANY PEOPLE ARE DYING IN THE SAME LINE, BECAUSE (THE DOCTORS) HAVE NO WAY OF THINKING 'I'M GOING TO LET THEM LIVE OR DIE' SINCE THEY DIDN'T EVEN GET CONSIDERED FOR A PLACE IN A ICU BED. THOSE PEOPLE ARE DYING WAITING FOR THAT SLOT. CARLOS VASCONCELLOS, SPOKESPERSON FOR THE RIVER DOCTORS' UNION:TRANSLATION: "THE SERVICES WERE OUTSOURCED, PEOPLE LOST STABILITY AND THERE WAS A LACK OF INTEREST FROM THE MOST SPECIALIZED PROFESSIONALS TO MAKE A CAREER IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR (...) THIS GENERATED A DISORGANIZATION AT THE TIME OF THE CRISIS AND THERE IS LITTLE CREDIBILITY THAT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE BEING MOBILIZED TO WORK HAVE EFFECTIVE RIGHTS SUCH AS EVEN THAT OF QUARANTINE"."THERE ARE SPEECHES BY THE PRESIDENT SAYING THAT PEOPLE SHOULD GO TO THE STREETS TO WORK BECAUSE 70 % OF THE POPULATION WOULD BE INFECTED AND THERE WOULD BE DEATH, THAT WAS NATURAL, BUT THE ECONOMY COULD NOT STOP".
