In Guinea, incumbent President Alpha Conde votes in a polling station in the capital Conakry. Twelve candidates are in the running to lead this country of some 12 million inhabitants, among the poorest in the world rival its immense natural resources. The 82-year-old Conde's mian opponent is long-time opponent Cellou Dalein Diallo, 68, who was formerly a prime minister under authoritarian leader Lansana Conte. Some 5.4 million registered voters are due to cast their ballots, and initial results are expected to be announced several days afterwards. A second round is scheduled for November 24. IMAGES

The poll follows months of political unrest, where mass protests against a Conde third term, from October last year, have left dozens of people dead in a security-forces crackdown. IMAGES
Thousands of Guinean opposition supporters gather in Conakry for a mass rally against President Alpha Conde's purported desire to stand for a third term in office. Wearing the opposition colour red, protesters carry placards reading "No to a new constitution" and "No to a third mandate for Alpha Conde". After becoming the country's first democratically-elected president in 2010, Conde was re-elected in 2015, though under the present constitution, presidents are limited to two terms in office. IMAGES
