Volvo Cars comes to Automobility LA this year with a world-first: not a single car on the stand. Instead the company will demonstrate its vision, redefining what a car can be. Since motor shows were introduced, the car has always been a centrepiece, on a rotating stage or covered under a silk sheet. Yet cars are changing, the industry is changing and so are the expectations of people who use cars. Volvo at Automobility LA reflects these changes.How consumers experience a car brand is today more important than chrome, leather or horsepower. So on the Volvo stand, visitors will look to the central space where they would expect to find a car, and instead see a simple yet surprising statement: ‘This Is Not A Car’.

Volvo's Patent: Slide Steering Wheel Out

Volvo Volvo filed a patent application for a steering wheel that slides side to side within a car's cabin. The design would allow passengers in a highly automated vehicle of the future to move the steering wheel out of the way and have more room to stretch out. Although driver-assistance systems are the new craze, true autonomous vehicles — cars that will allow for driving without any human intervention — are still nowhere close to hitting the streets. The feature could also come into play in a highly automated future vehicle, enabling passengers to slide the wheel out of the way when the driver-assistance system takes over, according to the filing.

Le constructeur suédois Volvo Cars tire profit des capacités de la montre connectée Band 2 de l'Américain Microsoft pour commander à distance le chauffage, les vitres ou la navigation de la voiture. "Nous n’innovons pas pour le plaisir d’innover. Lorsqu’un système ne rend pas la vie de nos clients plus facile, plus belle, plus sûre et plus agréable, nous ne le retenons pas.
