Mini John Cooper Works (JCW) review - Carbuyer

Description

The MINI John Cooper Works is quick enough to worry larger hot hatchbacks, just be mindful of the purchase price. The most powerful production MINI you can buy, the MINI John Cooper Works hatchback ups the ante from the Cooper S and serves as the flagship of the range. The other hint to its potency is that it uses the name of one of the biggest influences on the small car's history – John Cooper. The JCW builds on the MINI brand's famous ‘go-kart-like’ handling ability with stiffer and lower suspension than other models and a more powerful version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine used in the Cooper S.Smaller than a Golf GTI, the JCW is a better match for cars like the Audi S1 and Abarth 595 Competizione – a hot version of the chic Fiat 500 city car. The JCW starts at just over £23,000 – around £2,000 cheaper than the S1, but roughly £2,000 more expensive than the Abarth. And it's a massive £5,500 more than the cheapest version of our favourite small hot hatch, the Ford Fiesta ST.

  • MINI Clubman 2015 review - Carbuyer

The new MINI Clubman is the largest car MINI has ever made, and the latest model has ditched the old car's odd door layout in favour of traditional doors. The barn doors at the back remain, and the MINI Clubman is best to be seen as a rival for traditional family hatchbacks instead of being a true load-lugging estate car. It doesn't come cheap, and once you dive into the extensive options list you could end up spending a small fortune, but the Clubman is fun to drive, impressively spacious for a MINI and it's certainly distinctive both inside and out. The high-quality interior goes some way to justifying the car's high price, too.

  • New Specialized S-Works Aethos: First Ride Review

Specialized has unveiled its brand new lightweight road bike platform, the Aethos, which boasts an incredible frame weight of 588g in a 56cm size, and hits only 5.9kg for an overall build. The lightest production disc road bike we’ve ever seen, the Aethos has not been conceived for competition in the WorldTour, and it makes no attempt to stick to the UCI’s weight limit of 6.8kg. Yet, despite it’s 5.9kg overall weight, this bike is not simply an exercise in cutting grams. Specialized claims that the Aethos is the most technologically advanced bike the brand has ever produced, yet is designed around the needs and passions of the most dedicated bike lovers.
