Images show people standing amidst the rubble of a house that was destroyed by a Russian air strike that killed seven people, four of them children, in the Jisr al-Shughur countryside of northern Syria. Russia, which did not comment immediately on the raid, is a main backer of President Bashar al-Assad's regime. With Russian and Iranian support, Damascus clawed back much of the ground lost in the early stages of Syria's conflict, which erupted in 2011 when the government brutally repressed pro-democracy protests. The last pocket of armed opposition to the regime includes large swathes of Idlib province and parts of the neighbouring Aleppo, Hama and Latakia provinces. IMAGES
At least 21 civilians, including five children, were killed on Monday in air strikes on Syria's northern Aleppo province, despite a "de-escalation zone" in place there, a monitor said. IMAGES
A top UN official has said Bangladesh's plan to build the world's biggest refugee camp for 800,000-plus Rohingya Muslims was dangerous because overcrowding could heighten the risks of deadly diseases spreading quickly. The arrival of more than half a million Rohingya refugees who have fled an army crackdown in Myanmar's troubled Rakhine state since August 25 has put an immense strain on already packed camps in Bangladesh. Rescue crews rush to extinguish the burning wreckage of a car after an Israeli strike targeted and killed a Hamas official in the southern Lebanese city of Saida, according to a Lebanese security source. It is the first strike of its kind in Sidon since the Palestinian militant group launched its October 7 attack on Israel, triggering war in Gaza and prompting its Lebanese ally Hezbollah to begin trading near-daily cross-border fire with the Israeli army in a bid to tie down its troops. Smoke rises following Israeli strikes on the eastern part of central Gaza's Bureij refugee camp. In the south of the besieged territory, the Hamas-run health ministry said 73 people were killed and more than 200 wounded as Israeli jets pounded Khan Yunis hours after it ordered civilians to evacuate parts of the southern Gazan city. Police are out in force on the streets of the Kenyan capital Nairobi, after calls for more demonstrations against the embattled government of President William Ruto. As protestors gather in the central business district, police in riot gear fire tear gas, repelling some people with batons. Even as street protests have eased since dozens of people were killed and parliament stormed in late June, activists are still demanding the president's resignation, and calling for new rallies using the hashtag "RutoMustGo".
