Syria: air strike on Aleppo hospital kills 20, ceasefire "barely alive" as fighting intensifies

Description

Due to the intensification of fighting in the region of Aleppo, the ceasefire appears barely alive. The United Nations mediator on Thursday called on the leaders of the United States and the Russian Federation to salvage the “barely alive” two-month-old ceasefire in Syria and revitalise the damaged peace process.

Russia, which did not comment immediately on the raid, is a main backer of President Bashar al-Assad's regime. With Russian and Iranian support, Damascus clawed back much of the ground lost in the early stages of Syria's conflict, which erupted in 2011 when the government brutally repressed pro-democracy protests. The last pocket of armed opposition to the regime includes large swathes of Idlib province and parts of the neighbouring Aleppo, Hama and Latakia provinces. IMAGES
