The Zoo of Copenhagen has released footage of a baby elephant which was born last week in captivity as part of a European breeding program for Asian elephants. The mother is 16 year old Maha Kumari and the fathers name is Fahim. The name and gender of the baby elephant aren't known yet. Calves weight in beetween 70 and 90kg at birth after spending 22 months in their mothers wombs, the longest gestation in the animal kindom. Elephant births in zoos are relatively rare with a total number of 18 worldwide in 2023 IMAGES
The giant panda Tian Tian, on loan from China to the Washington Zoo, is busy in his pen the day after the birth of the baby panda he had with Mei Xiang. She was artificially inseminated on March 22 with Tian Tian's frozen semen. IMAGES

Vous avez un lapin, une poule ou un cochon d’Inde en bonne santé que vous ne voulez plus ? Un zoo au Danemark vous propose de le récupérer pour nourrir ses prédateurs. Le zoo d’Aalborg accepte les dons d’animaux vivants – même des chevaux – pour nourrir lions, tigres ou lynx. Les petits animaux sont ensuite euthanasiés « en douceur » par du personnel formé. Selon le zoo, ces animaux font partie du régime naturel des carnivores, avec os, poils et tout le reste. Ils disent vouloir reproduire la chaîne alimentaire, comme dans la nature. Sur son site internet, sous une photo d’un tigre dévorant un morceau de viande, le zoo d’Aalborg détaille les conditions pour faire don d’un cheval. Pour être éligibles, les chevaux doivent posséder un passeport équin et ne pas avoir été traités pour une maladie au cours des 30 derniers jours. Et en bonus, vous pourriez obtenir une déduction fiscale. Banco. C’est une pratique assez courante au Danemark. Le zoo précise qu’il le fait depuis des années, et que certains visiteurs trouvent ça appréciable de pouvoir contribuer aux repas des prédateurs du zoo. Évidemment, ce procédé soulève un débat : est-ce une manière écologique de nourrir les animaux ou juste une pratique dérangeante et immorale
