A red panda cub has been born in an Indian zoo as part of a conservation breeding program to increase the population of the endangered animal. With habitats under threat in the Eastern Himalayas and China, red pandas are considered endangered and are highly vulnerable to infectious diseases. Their copper fur, appearance and small size also make them targets for the exotic pet trade.
Two red panda cubs were born in an Indian zoo, to an adult female red panda named Shobha and a male red panda named Noel. The cubs were born as part of a conservation breeding program to increase the population of the endangered animal, says the director of the zoo in north east India where the cubs were born.
Five-month-old male Meng Xiang ("long-awaited dream") and Meng Yuan ("dream come true") panda cubs, make their first public appearance at the Berlin Zoo. The two cuddly cubs were the first pandas to be born in a German zoo, and have been nicknamed "Pit" and "Paule" by their carers.
The bison calf was an unexpected, but delightful surprise, for two English wildlife charities that are carrying out a rewilding project.
