  • Protests continue in Washington DC over police brutality, George Floyd's death

Washington DC, Jun 1 (EFE).- Protests continued in Washington DC on Monday against police brutality that resulted in the death last week of a black man in Minneapolis. The 46-year-old Floyd died on May 25 when a Minneapolis police officer - Derek Chauvin - knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes after Floyd had been handcuffed and placed facedown on the pavement. During the first several minutes, Floyd complained that he could not breathe and pleaded for help, but then he lost consciousness, although Chauvin remained kneeling on his neck for another several minutes. Passersby made videos of the incident with their cellphones, begged the officers to stop kneeling on Floyd - to no avail - and posted the videos to the social networks, and these recordings show Chauvin kneeling with his full body weight on Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes both before and after he lost consciousness. The videos went viral and have sparked days - and nights - of protests, rioting and looting in most major US cities, including Minneapolis. In Washington DC, security forces pushed back protesters using their shields and deployed tear gas against them.It was the third day of protests in front of the presidential residence and only a few minutes before the curfew decreed by the mayor of the capital, Muriel Bowser, entered into force to prevent the riots and looting of the previous day from recurring. • Peaceful protests continue past curfew in DC

Washington DC, Jun 2 (EFE/EPA).- Thousands of people protesting police violence against African Americans remained on the streets of the US capital Tuesday minutes ahead of the 7.00 pm curfew announced by the municipal government. The crowds appeared to be significantly larger than on Monday, when federal law enforcement personnel resorted to tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets and flash-bang grenades to clear peaceful protesters from Lafayette Square, next to the White House, so President Donald Trump could walk to a nearby church to be photographed holding the Bible. The demonstrators who came out Tuesday marched toward the White House, but found Lafayette Park surrounded by a fence 2.5m (8ft) high. • Protests continue in Washington DC in defiance of curfew

Washington DC, Jun 2 (EFE/EPA).- Protests over police brutality against African Americans gathered momentum in cities across the United States Tuesday, fueled by outrage at the president’s threat of militarization and the tactics used to clear demonstrators.More than a week after African-American man George Floyd died at the hands of a white police officer, at least 40 cities have declared curfews and deployed members of the National Guard as protests across the country continue, although the destruction and looting of previous days seem to have subsided.Thousands of people gathered in central Washington DC as protesters also flooded the streets of New York, Los Angeles and Houston on the eighth day of protests.Protesters on the front line of the protests in Washington DC chanted and shouted in front of security forces deployed on the other side of a chain-link fence about 2.5 meters (8 feet) high, installed Tuesday morning along the northern edge of Lafayette Square, next to the White House. The new fence prevented protesters from approaching the White House and occupying Lafayette Park, which on Monday was the scene of chaos as security forces dispersed protesters so that Trump could walk across the square and pose for a photo in front of a church.(Camera: CARLOS VILAS/EDWIN RAMIREZ).
