McLeod Ganj, Jul 6 (EFE/EPA).- Thousands of followers of the 14th Dalai Lama gathered in northern India on Monday to celebrate the 85th birthday of the Buddhist spiritual leader with traditional rituals and chants.In a valley surrounded by the Himalayas, the Dalai Lama talked about love and compassion and religious tolerance and urged young people to spread the message of harmony and love.One of the largest celebrations was held in the northern city of Dharamsala, where the Dalai Lama has been living and guiding a government-in-exile since he fled from Tibet following a failed uprising against China in 1959.Born as Lhamo Dondhup, the 14th Dalai Lama was born on Jul. 6, 1935 in Taktser in eastern Tibet and was named the next spiritual leader of his community at the age of 2.Alongside spreading the message of peace worldwide, the Nobel Peace laureate has been tirelessly fighting for the rights and freedom of Tibetans, risking the wrath of Chinese authorities, who consider him a separatist. Dharamshala, Apr 28 (EFE).-The guarded complex with a yellow facade in McLeodganj, a town in India's Himalaya mountain range, is shrouded in silence these days as it protects the "last" Dalai Lama from coronavirus through complete isolation.Since late February, the Tibetan Buddhist leader, who walked across the Himalayas in 1959 after a failed popular uprising in Lhasa against the Chinese rule, has remained confined to his humble residence in permanent exile, this time due to the fear of a virus that, ironically, also originated in China.The rapid spread of the disease has afflicted the densely populated India, his adopted country, and become a threat for everyone, including Lhamo Dhondup, the birth name of the highest leader of Tibetan Buddhism and the last symbol of a legacy whose continuity is increasingly doubtful.His public appearances were officially suspended on Mar. 9, two weeks before India ordered a complete lockdown for its 1.3 billion inhabitants, including those in Himachal Pradesh, the state where the Buddhist guru lives and where more than 40 cases and one death - of a Tibetan who returned from the United States in mid-March - has been reported so far. Kolkata, Oct 8 (EFE/EPA).- Hindu devotees in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal were gearing up on Friday to celebrate Durga Puja festival, amid the coronavirus pandemic.The five-day-long celebration marks the homecoming of Goddess Durga, one of the major deities in the Indian pantheon of gods and goddesses, and her victory over the forces of evil.
