An Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) envoy says the bloc has "expressed concern over the resurgence of coup d'etats in the region, in non consensual, constitutional reform processes in some member states", during a press conference held in Lagos. Goodluck Jonathan adds "this impacts on peace, security and stability in the region." SOUNDBITE
West African leaders began a key summit to address the latest coup in the region. Emergency talks in the Ghanaian capital Accra were triggered after Burkina Faso on January 24 became the third member of the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to be overtaken by the military in less than two years - which Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo calls 'of grave concern' in his opening statement. Ghanaian president Nana Akufo-Addo, current chairman of the West African regional bloc ECOWAS, is greeted by interim Malian president Bah Ndaw as he arrives in Bamako for an official visit to meet the post-coup government. On Friday, the African Union lifted its suspension of Mali which went into effect after a military coup toppled the West African nation's government in August. IMAGES
