The combination of the two winners Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzai, Hindu and Muslim, Indian and Pakistani, was chosen because they join in a common struggle for education and against extremism.
The Nobel prize in economics is awarded to American economist Claudia Goldin for helping understand the role of women in the labour market. The Harvard professor, who is the third woman to be awarded the prestigious economics prize, was given the nod "for having advanced our understanding of women's labour market outcomes," says Hans Ellegren, Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen, says they "hope" Iran would release jailed Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi so she could attend the prize ceremony in December. "If the Iranian authorities make the right decision, they will release her," she tells a press conference after announcing Mohammadi was this year's prize winner. SOUNDBITE
