This year marks the 26th anniversary of the June 4 protests in China, where an unknown number of student protesters were killed in a government-ordered crackdown in and around Tiananmen Square.
Turkish police have sealed off Istanbul's central Taksim Square to prevent any May Day protests, with scuffles breaking out in the nearby Besiktas district after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned unions to stay away from any provocative steps. The stepped-up security measures come a day after Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said authorities had designated 40 areas for May Day celebrations with the exception of the emblematic Taksim Square. On the last day of Russia's presidential elections, set to cement Vladimir Putin's grip on power, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny widow, Yulia Navalnaya, tells the press after voting at the Russian embassy in Berlin that Putin is "a killer" and a "gangster.
