As if the end of the year weren't hard enough, the December jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics said 140,000 jobs were lost last month. According to Business Insider, the data shows all of those lost jobs were held by women. Among the newly-unemployed, Black and Latina women working in retail and education sectors were hit the hardest. The US posted a surprise decline in payrolls in December and all of the 140,000 jobs lost were held by women. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread, the US economic recovery has been mostly stagnant. Small businesses nationwide have been hit particularly hard. Many are being forced to lay off staff or close altogether to curb the pandemic's spread.
Pulse oximeters measure the percentage of oxygen in the blood when clipped onto a fingertip. And according to HuffPost, they're becoming increasingly popular for home use. People are buying them to monitor a family member if he or she becomes seriously ill with COVID-19. Doctors praise the use of pulse oximeters because they can alert people who don’t realize they’re gravely ill to the fact that their body is struggling for oxygen. One of the biggest worries with COVID-19 is when someone doesn’t realize their oxygen levels have dropped because they don’t actually feel unwell. It's a phenomenon sometimes referred to as happy hypoxia or silent hypoxia. As a normal reading usually ranges from 95-100%, if your reading is under 95%, it's a red flag. Seek medical attention immediately.
At least five Los Angeles County hospitals had to turn patients away on Sunday, citing an 'internal disaster.' In the week before Christmas, the state averaged more than 40,000 new coronavirus infections every day. CNN reports that at some area hospitals, aging infrastructure was unable to keep up with the high number of patients needing oxygen. The issue was not the lack of oxygen itself--rather, the buildings were unable to maintain the necessary pressure to deliver the oxygen. Some hospitals are moving COVID-19 patients down to lower floors to make it easier to pump the oxygen through pipes. There are multiple issues involving oxygen delivery to patients, but generally, the problem is not an absolute shortage of oxygen. Dr. Christina Ghaly Director, Los Angeles County Health Services
Joe Camp worked as a preschool teacher in Charlotte, North Carolina, for twenty years. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit hard, he was laid off in September. Then, he lost his father a month later.
