The EU says it will review the protected status of wolves in Europe and decide on possible changes to introduce flexibility "where it is necessary" based on a data collection exercise. The remarks follow European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warning of the "real danger" of wolf packs in the European Union, and a call for data on wolf numbers and their impact to be submitted by September 22. Under the EU Habitat Directive, first adopted in 1992, the wolf enjoys protected status but local and national exceptions to the law are possible. SOUNDBITE
