The German perfume group Douglas, owner of the French Nocibé, announces the closure of nearly 20% of its shops in Europe, to concentrate on online sales, after the pandemic has caused a drop in its in-store activity. "About 500 of the 2,400 European shops will be closed by autumn 2022," the German group has said in a statement. Former Rep. Mickey Edwards of Oklahoma said leaving the Republican Party because of Trump's control over the party. Edwards said the GOP has become a "cult" under President Donald Trump. He decried Republicans who backed Trump's effort to overturn President-elect Joe Biden's election win. "This has become a cult," he said.
Johnny Depp lost his libel case against a British tabloid that had labeled him a "wife beater" in an article about his ex-wife Amber Heard. Business Insider reports that Christian Dior has kept Depp as the face of its men's fragrance. But it is not airing ads in conservative markets. In May, Depp is set to go to trial again in a defamation case against Heard over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post suggesting he abused her. After that verdict, a branding expert said Depp's career would be "over."
CNN is reporting that Johnny Depp is stepping down from the 'Fantastic Beasts' franchise. On Friday, Warner Brothers announced Depp will no longer play the villainous dark wizard at the center of the action in the "Harry Potter" prequels. In a statement Depp said he complied with Warner's request to resign from the project. Depp earlier this week lost a libel suit against the publisher of Britain's The Sun newspaper over the publication's claims that he was an abusive husband. Depp's biggest supporter, JK Rowling, had no comment. Rowling has stood by the troubled actor, even as details of heinous of Depp's abuse of actress Amber Heard emerged.
The NY Times reports that President Donald Trump has had more than $280 million in debt forgiven since 2010. According to Business Insider most of it was linked to money he owed lenders for the construction of a massive skyscraper in Chicago. Trump borrowed money for the Trump International Hotel & Tower from Germany's Deutsche Bank and Fortress Investment Group. Trump failed to pay the money bank. The lenders initially gave him more time. According to tax return records and loan documents viewed by the NY Times eventually Deutsche and Fortress forgave the debt.
