The United States are "quite concerned" about Israel government closing Al Jazeera, says US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday his government had decided unanimously to close the channel, and hours later it went off-air in the country. SOUNDBITE
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has asked China's foreign minister and other counterparts to use their influence to dissuade Iran from striking Israel, the State Department says. Blinken spoke by telephone to his Chinese, Turkish, Saudi and European counterparts "to make clear that escalation is not in anyone's interest and that countries should urge Iran not to escalate," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters. The White House will demand more information from Israel after "deeply concerning" reports of bodies found strewn at Gaza's largest hospital complex as Israeli forces pulled out after an intensive military operation there. "It is deeply concerning if it's true. We are reaching out to the Israeli government to get more information," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tells reporters in Washington. SOUNDBITE
The White House says it is concerned by an Israeli move to ban broadcasts of Qatari news channel Al Jazeera in the country, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to enforce "immediately."
