Doom: The Dark Ages prend la suite de Doom Eternal avec un paradigme repensé. Finis les mouvements incessants, place aux combats plus « posés » avec un bouclier. C’est toujours aussi gore et jouissif. Nos impressions positives après trois heures de jeu. En 2020, Doom Eternal établissait sa loi dans le genre du fast FPS. Sa philosophie était limpide : pour survivre, il fallait continuellement bouger, sans jamais s’arrêter. Le moindre temps mort risquait sinon d’être fatal. Bethesda et id Software auraient pu itérer sur cette formule intense, à la fois jouissive et gratifiante. Mais, pour Doom: The Dark Ages, ils ont préféré partir sur un autre postulat. Numerama a pu découvrir ce nouvel opus, attendu pour le 15 mai 2025, en avant-première. Les changements nous ont plus que conquis. Doom: The Dark Ages constitue un prologue du reboot paru en 2016 — et, par extension, de Doom Eternal. Pour les développeurs, c’était l’occasion de plonger dans un univers médialo-fantastique qui sied à merveille à la saga culte, sachant que la narration est un peu plus poussée cette fois-ci, pour épaissir davantage le lore. On apprend notamment que le Slayer a démarré sa carrière comme super-arme contrôlée par des dieux, crainte de tous, et envoyée au combat quand la situation devient critique. Ils n’ont laissé au héros que sa haine pour les démons, ce qui explique la rage qui s’empare de lui quand il doit combattre. Une rage qui contamine tout un gameplay repensé.
