To celebrate Saint Nicholas Day, Belgium has added a new black female character - Queen Nikkolah - to the holiday's roster. While the move has stirred up controversy with far-right politicians accusing the character of threatening traditions, many have embraced Queen Nikkolah and see her as a modern and feminist version to colonial portrayals of Saint Nicholas and his sidekick Black Pete.
The death toll from landslides and flooding triggered by heavy rainfall in northern Tanzania climbed to at least 63 on Monday, a regional official said, as rescue workers searched for trapped survivors. Lawyers representing a large group of Palestinian NGOs have filed a complaint of "genocide" against Israel with the International Criminal Court. The court's chief prosecutor, who is investigating the situation of the Palestinians, will decide how to deal with the complaint. Israel is not a member of the court.
