Especially in uncertain times like these, the dream of owning one's home free and clear is an enticing one. On the other hand, isn't saving for retirement, or college funds more important? According to Business Insider, if you have the opportunity to pay off your mortgage early, the deciding factor comes down to just one thing: interest rates. If the rate on your mortgage is higher than the rate you'd earn by investing cash in the stock market, pay down the debt first. But before you do that, run the numbers to see if refinancing your mortgage would make sense. If so, you can apply the freed-up cash towards your high-interest debt. Once that's cleared up, pay off the mortgage!
Malaria-causing parasites in Africa and southeast Asia are developing genetic mutations that pose grave health implications to the people there. UPI reports researchers collected samples in countries battling the mosquito-borne illness. They found genetic mutations that fuel resistance to a drug intended to prevent malaria in pregnant women and children are common. The gene mutations are linked with resistance to the drug sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine. The mutations were discovered in one-fourth of the samples collected in southeast Asia and one-third of those obtained in Africa.
The coronavirus was likely in the U.S. as early as mid-December 2019. This is roughly a month before the first COVID-19 case was confirmed. A study was taken of blood samples from 7,389 routine donations to the American Red Cross. The donations were collected between Dec. 13, 2019, and Jan. 17, 2020. The study found evidence of COVID-19 antibodies in 106 specimens, according to HuffPost. The blood came from California, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington and Wisconsin.
