A group of six travellers began their 6,200 mile to Russia's far North-Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula traveling in a convoy of unique off-road SHERP vehicles from the Arctic Sea city of Arkhangelsk last weekend. The expedition plan to cross Russia from Arkhangelsk, located near the Russian border with Norway, to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, on the southern tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula across the Pacific Ocean from the US, a journey which will take between 6 to 8 months, making it the longest overland route north of the Arctic Circle. The vehicle, constructed by Alexei Garagashyan, has a pneumatic circulating suspension, which helps to distribute air between its 800-litre low pressure tires. The ATV can perform a wide range of complicated maneuvers, including climbing onto ice from out of water and passing yard high obstacles, such as rocks or fallen trees. The SHERP is ideal for forest workers and rescue services because of its versatility.
