  • ŠKODA SUPERB - 20 years of luxury ride

The ŠKODA SUPERB, the top model of the Mladá Boleslav-based car manufacturer, is celebrating its 20th anniversary: on 11 September 2001, the 4.80-metre notchback saloon with its spacious interior, powerful yet economical engines and numerous safety and comfort features made its debut at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main. ŠKODA offers the current, third model generation as a hatchback or estate, optionally available also with all-wheel drive and as the SUPERB iV with plug-in hybrid drive.ŠKODA has a long tradition of producing mid-size and premium models. As early as 1907, twelve years after the founding of Laurin & Klement in Mladá Boleslav, the fledgling company launched the Type FF, a vehicle that offered true luxury. The eight-cylinder in-line engine was designed in-house, as were subsequent models with engines that were as powerful as they were smooth-running. These were also equipped with the innovative Knight slide control system among other features. Between 1925 and 1936, the ŠKODA Hispano-Suiza limousine was used by the then President of the Republic, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, along with numerous other prominent figures at the time. In the early 1930s, the car manufacturer from Mladá Boleslav offered a wide range of models with six-cylinder (ŠKODA 633, 645 and 650) or eight-cylinder engines (ŠKODA 860).

  • 101-year-old drives Ford Mustang Mach-E – 90 years after first learning to drive in a Model T

Born in 1920, Harold Baggott, had his first taste of getting behind the wheel of the Model T aged 10, driving the family’s milkman’s delivery float on a farm. He went on to get his license in 1936 (the first year they were introduced), and purchased his first car, a Ford 8 Popular in 1937 for £100 and a Ford Anglia the next year.Since then the family has owned 20 Fords privately, as well as Ford commercial vehicles in chassis form, converted into coaches for a fleet of 140 run by their travel and coach business.Mr Baggott was reminded of his Model T experiences with rides in a 1915 model from Ford’s heritage collection, before moving bang up to date and behind the Mustang Mach-E’s steering wheel.Driving 15-year-old Felix, who has ambitions to be a racing driver, and his 12-year-old brother Charlie, three miles from Beaulieu to former shipbuilding village Bucklers Hard, Mr Baggott was struck by the quietness of electric motoring.

  • The 90 dizzying years of the Hotel Nacional de Cuba

Havana, Jan 26 (EFE).- The American mafia plotted assassinations in its halls, its gardens were turned into trenches during the missile crisis and Tarzan used the second floor as a springboard to jump into the pool: few places in the world house as many stories as the Hotel Nacional de Cuba. (Camera: FELIPE BORREGO)SHOT LIST: B-ROLL OF THE NATIONAL CUBAN HOTEL.SOUND BITES: HISTORIAL EXPERT OF THE HOTEL ALEEN ORTIZ (IN SPANISH)Translations:1. The hotel reached its ninety years on December 30, just a few days ago, and it was the moment of the reopening of the hotel as well, after several months closed by the epidemic itself.2. Within everything we do to improve the hotel services, the standards, there is always the premise that the hotel is a national monument, therefore we cannot transform it. Our task is to preserve the heritage of Cuba and offer people that history that is what they are looking for with the convenience and comfort of the present.3. Many things are said about the gangsters, but they were even friendly. They interacted with customers, with employees. There are still those who recall it, most of them do not live anymore but we have their testimonnials, about how they were even asked about theit families. But behind the mafia is the other side of the coin. And it was right at the hotel where the murder of Ben Siegel, who they call the Las Vegas procursor, was planned.4. Once you discover the stories of the hotel, it allows you to broadly tell the history of Cuba, from the aborigines to the present.5. The hotel does not stop making history, and then personal experiences come, that is, when our guests come they want to sleep where Frank Sinatra and Aba Garner slept, where Luc and Luciano stayed, where Winston Churchill was. It's reliving the past a bit.6. It was scene of the missile crisis, or the October crisis as we call it here in Cuba, of October 1962, after the Cuban revolution when the world was on the brink of World War III. From the hotel garden, the hotel already existed because the hotel was founded in the 1930s. Well, from this garden you could protect yourself from a possible American invasion expected after the invasion of Bay of Pigs.
