The European Central Bank is "very attentive" to economic risks posed by the conflict between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas, ECB president Christine Lagarde says after a meeting held exceptionally in Athens. Referring to the crisis in the Middle East as well as the war in Ukraine, she says: "We are monitoring the situation, we are very attentive to the economic consequences that that could have, whether in terms of direct or indirect impact on energy prices, or the level of confidence that economic actors will continue to display." EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warns Moscow not to use the alleged drone attack that it said targeted the Kremlin to escalate its war in Ukraine. "We call on Russia not to use this alleged attack as an excuse to continue the escalation of the war," Borrell tells journalists in Brussels as he attends an EU ministers meeting. SOUNDBITE
UN rights chief Volker Turk says that violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in Ukraine "have become shockingly routine" since the Russian invasion. SOUNDBITE
European Council President Charles Michel warns that the coming weeks could decide the course of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He makes the statement following a meeting between European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. "The next few weeks and months will probably be decisive. This is not the time to tremble, this is the time to be lucid and this is the time to deploy maximum support," Michel says. SOUNDBITE
