In January 2021 Clare Smyth became the first British woman chef to be awarded three Michelin stars, for her Notting Hill restaurant 'Core', becoming only the fourth British chef to ever receive the honour. She says it was "brilliant that it happened in such a difficult year", and as restaurants prepare to welcome diners back for indoor service she says she expects "many, many more top female chefs" to come through in the years ahead.
A plant-based restaurant has become the first vegan eatery to earn a Michelin star. The restaurant, in the small village of Arès, near Bordeaux, is a completely animal-free establishment. According to CNN, the restaurant "ONA" will appear in the Michelin Guide to France. It is among 54 restaurants to earn its first star in the 2021 update. Michelin said a "key takeaway from the 2021 selection is the continued spread of diverse styles of cuisine". ONA boasts a seven-course evening menu priced at $72.00
Burger King Belgium has launched a Change.org campaign to get a Michelin star for its new Master Angus Burger. Kevin Derycke, the CEO of Burger King Belgium, has officially launched a campaign to acquire the honor. Derycke asked "how many Michelin star meals are served to guests in five minutes and don’t require reservations, let alone reservations months in advance?" Michelin has responded on social media. Michelin said they would try the burger. “See you on 11/1 to discover our next edition of the Michelin Guide Belgium and Luxembourg and find out if Burger King fast food deserves a star!”
Burger King has suggested that one of its beef burgers deserves a Michelin star. CNN reports that marketing campaign has caught the eye of the respected culinary guide. The fast food giant's Belgian arm launched a petition demanding a sought-after star for its new Master Angus burger. Burger King is encouraging followers to sign an online petition aimed at Michelin Guide inspectors. The campaign promoted a response from the Michelin guide social media team. Michelin jokingly promised that an inspector would judge the burger.
French/Italian chef Marc Lanteri continues to work alone in his Michelin star restaurant in northern Italy as he turns to deliveries. He is trying to reach a "more local clientele" with lower prices as he waits for government guidelines on how he'll be able to open again. He delivers his food in vacuum-sealed bags or on trays and his customers can follow online instructions to "make a gastronomic meal".
