June's full moon, known as "strawberry supermoon", rises over the UK. On June 14, the moon orbits closest to the earth, marking the last "supermoon" of the year. IMAGES
Stargazers in Athens, Greece, had the chance to witness a rare "super blue blood Moon" over the Acropolis, when Earth's shadow bathed our satellite in a coppery hue. IMAGES
The night sky hosted a very rare phenomenon on Monday. If you thought the moon was especially close on Monday night, don't worry, you're not crazy - the moon was unusually close and bigger than ever. It's called a 'supermoon' and it happens when our moon gets to its closest point of orbit to the Earth. This time, the moon was closer than it had ever been in 68 year and it was visible all over the world. The dazzling supermoon lit up the night sky of Berlin, shining down on the Brandenburg Gate, TV Tower, Berliner Dom, and other classical landmarks. Like in other parts of the globe, professional and amateur photographers in Berlin, as well as ordinary dazzlers, lined up to admire the Moon at its closest point to the Earth in 68 years. A 'supermoon' occurs when the moon becomes full on the same day as its perigee, the point in the moon's orbit when it is closest to the Earth. Supermoons generally appear to be 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than the average full moon. At its shortest distance from the earth, the moon is around 225,000 miles away, a short distance in terms of our solar system. If you missed this jawdropping supermoon, don't worry, you will have another chance sometime around 2034, or just under 20 years.
Smoke rises following a strike in eastern Rafah after Israel's military called for the evacuation of Palestinians from eastern Rafah. Israel has long been threatening a ground invasion of the southern Gaza city. IMAGES
Images taken from the Israeli border show smoke rising over the central Gaza Strip following a strike. The Israeli army has said it is evacuating about 100,000 people from eastern Rafah, ahead of an expected ground assault in the southern Gazan city. The evacuations come after reports that 16 people were killed in Israeli strikes on Rafah, hours after Hamas rockets had killed three Israeli soldiers on Sunday May 5. IMAGES
