Living room practice table is Thai's last stop on long road to Tokyo

Description

Thai table tennis star Orawan Paranang fires balls across the practice table that dominates the living room of her modest house on the edge of Bangkok. The makeshift training setup is the final stage of a 17-year journey that has taken the left-hander from poverty in rural Thailand to the grand stage of the Olympics.

(Camera: ENRIQUE DEL VISO / TATO PÉREZ)SOUND BITES: CANOEIST TERESA PORTELA (IN SPANISH)TRANSLATIONS:Super happy. This was my sixth Olympic participation. I already felt that I was living a dream, something very big. It is also true that I came from the previous world championship being a bronze medalist and that I was still there. I was also aware that in the 200 meters I could either be within the finaists or the medalists. So, well, I was finally able to row in the finals and have emptied myself, I gave it my all. I felt strong and I felt that I had mastered my test quite well, so finally because of this medal, which was so desired, that I pursued for so many years and that I was finally able to get it, I am happy.

  • Why Authentic Handwoven Panama Hats May Not Be Long For This Earth

Ecuadorean weavers in the Andean mountains have been making authentic Panama hats by hand for centuries. In fact, it takes a weaver an entire day to make just one hat--and earn just five US dollars. That's not enough to keep up with the cost of living. According to Business Insider, the traditional artisan craft is now in danger of disappearing into the fog of history. In the small village of Puzhio, for example, the number of hat weavers has dropped from 124 to just 25 in the past 15 years. Many have left the country in search of more lucrative--and less tedious--work. And those who remain have little faith that future generations will carry on the tradition.

  • Long Walk Home: US Citizens Living In Mexico Endure Hours-Long Waits To Cast Votes

As if dealing with the drama of the US general election wasn't challenging enough, US citizens who live in Mexico--and want to vote--have it even worse. According to Business Insider, those Americans must endure hours-long waits at the border before they reach the ballot box. On Election Day, thousands of US citizens living in Mexico crowded the international bridges to El Paso, Texas, just to cast their vote. Most waited over two hours. The international bridge between Ciudad Juarez and El Paso was also completely full. Even with COVID-related restrictions in place, the line stretched out for nearly a mile. But voters whose lives straddle the border say it's a small price to participate in an election that will have a profound impact on both countries. All this extreme border vigilance, the paranoia, and the hate speech toward us, Latinos, is exactly why we needed to vote today. Joaquín Almanza US Citizen, Juarez resident
