The European Union says it has allocated 20 million euros ($21.8 million) worth of humanitarian aid to Haiti after gang violence plunged the Caribbean country into renewed chaos. "An unprecedented level of gang violence is dramatically increasing humanitarian needs across the country. The United States welcomes the vote to admit Sweden to NATO by Hungary, the last holdout in the Atlantic alliance. "We certainly do welcome the vote in the Hungarian parliament today and look forward to it being finalized," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters. SOUNDBITE
EU Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper says during a briefing in Brussels that the EU has launched action against Hungary after Budapest passed laws it says are intended to "protect Hungary's sovereignty" and curb foreign influence. SOUNDBITE
The EU should seek to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2040, its climate commissioner says, proposing a new interim target towards making the bloc carbon neutral in 2050. "Based on the best available science, and a detailed impact assessment, we are recommending that the 2040 target should be a 90 percent emission cut" compared to 1990 levels, says commissioner Wopke Hoekstra, calling for a "fair transition" that will allow EU businesses to thrive.
