Tourists and residents react as UNESCO recommends that Venice be placed on the list of World Heritage in Danger. UNESCO said in its recommendation that Venice risked "irreversible" damage due to a string of issues ranging from climate change to mass tourism. "It's true that coping with tourists in Venice is impossible", says Vanessa di Bernardo, a local waitress.
The UN's cultural agency UNESCO recommends that Venice be added to its list of world heritage in danger, saying the Italian authorities needed to step up efforts to secure the historic city and its surrounding lagoon.
The most eagerly-awaited historical event of the year in Venice opens with a procession of 16th century boats along the Grand Canal. The Regata Storica is one of the most spectacular and picturesque traditions of the city, followed closely by Venetians who gather along the banks of the Grand Canal to welcome the 300 athletes and participants.
