  • Mercedes-Benz and Bosch - automated ride-hailing service

    Bosch and Mercedes-Benz’s joint project to develop urban automated driving has now entered a new stage. Their pilot project for an app-based ride-hailing service using automated Mercedes-Benz S-Class vehicles has now been launched in the Silicon Valley city of San José. Monitored by a safety driver, the self-driving cars shuttle between West San José and downtown, along the San Carlos Street and Stevens Creek Boulevard thoroughfares. The service will initially be available to a select group of users. They will use an app developed by Daimler Mobility AG to book a journey by the automated S-Class vehicles from a defined pick-up point to their destination.Mercedes-Benz and Bosch hope this trial will provide valuable insights into the further development of their SAE Level 4/5 automated driving system. The partners also expect to gain further insights into how self-driving cars can be integrated into an intermodal mobility system that also includes public transportation and car-sharing.

  • Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT - Automatic Lane Change

    Mercedes-Benz will launch its production-ready version of DRIVE PILOT in the United States. The class-leading system for conditionally automated driving rolls out in late 2023 with a limited fleet of SAE Level 3 equipped EQS Sedans in California and Nevada called DRIVE PILOT: First Class. In early 2024, Mercedes-Benz plans for additional customer deliveries of DRIVE PILOT equipped MY2024 EQS Sedan and S‑Class models with participating authorized Mercedes-Benz dealers in California and Nevada.As the first automotive manufacturer in the world to introduce this system in a standard-production vehicle to U.S. customers, Mercedes-Benz once again sets the benchmark for pioneering advancements in automated driving. California and Nevada are the first two states to approve the system and issued certification for use on major freeways. While the regulatory framework varies by state, Mercedes-Benz intends to further expand availability of this revolutionary new technology to additional U.S. markets in the future.

  • Highly automated and driverless parking - now also available for the Mercedes-Benz EQE Saloon

    Driving into a car park, exiting the vehicle, and sending it to a pre-booked parking space via smartphone: with the Remote Parking Package and the Mercedes me connect service INTELLIGENT PARK PILOT, the Mercedes‑Benz EQE Saloon is now ready for highly automated and driverless parking (SAE Level 41). Additionally, the so-called Automated Valet Parking service is subsequently available for any equipped EQS Saloon and S‑Class Saloon models by Mercedes‑Benz2 that have already been delivered. The highly automated parking function will soon be available for additional Mercedes-Benz models such as the new E‑Class.The advantage of this highly automated parking function: Searching for a parking space and parking are no longer necessary. This not only saves customers valuable time but also makes their parking experience more comfortable, especially in narrow parking garages. Via the Mercedes me App, the driver books a parking space in advance and then leaves the vehicle in a designated drop-off area at the parking garage. Once all passengers have exited the vehicle, the driver can initiate the parking maneuver via the Mercedes me App. When the App confirms that the Automated Valet Parking infrastructure has taken control of the vehicle, the driver can leave the parking garage. Guided by the intelligent infrastructure provided by Bosch, the vehicle then automatically drives to the reserved parking space and parks automatically. When customers return to the parking garage, they can easily initiate the pick-up of their vehicle via smartphone. The vehicle automatically pulls out of its parking space, drives to the pick-up area and is ready for departure.

In addition to the anonymised data collected by LiDAR, camera, radar and ultrasound sensors, a digital HD map provides a three-dimensional image of the road and the surroundings with information on road geometry, route characteristics, traffic signs and special traffic events (e.g. accidents or road works). This high-precision map differs from maps for navigation devices by, among other things, its higher accuracy in the centimetre rather than metre range and its detailed junction and route model. The map data is stored in backend data centres and updated constantly. Each vehicle also stores an image of this map information on board, constantly compares it with the backend data and updates the local dataset as required. All of this enables stable and accurate positioning through a representation of the surroundings that is independent of factors such as shadows or dirty sensors.
