    Researchers have created a new immunotherapy technology to treat prostate cancer using synthetic DNA against a cancer specific protein. Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer in men worldwide. Most current treatment options are invasive, which can impair the quality of life of patients. Immunotherapy may provide a less invasive option. Researchers created a new DNA-based method involving an engineered DNA plasmid used to deliver instructions to make the desired anti-prostate specific membrane antigen elicit an anti-tumor immune system response to control cancer. The method was tested in mice, with researchers finding that antibodies were able to bind to cancer cells and use specific immune cells known as natural killer cells that resulted in tumor shrinkage and improved survival.

  • Scientists Develop Multicolor MRIs To Improve Disease Detection

    Researchers at Case Western Reserve University have developed a new method to make magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, scans multicolor to improve doctors' ability to detect diseases. Chris Flask, associate professor of Radiology, Biomedical Engineering, and Pediatrics, and director of the Imaging Resource Core at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, said in a news release, "The method we developed enables, for the first time, the simultaneous detection of two different MRI contrast agents." The new technique would allow doctors to chart multiple characteristics of a patient's internal organs in just one MRI test, which could lead to better disease diagnosis.

  • Scientists Develop Breakthrough Regenerative Tissue Technology

    Scientists at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center have developed a new technology that can generate any type of cell to be used for treatment in the body. The Tissue Nonotransfection, otherwise known as TNT, has the potential to repair injured tissue or even restore function to aging tissue. The study, published Monday in Nature Nanotechnology, was conducted on mice and pigs. Researchers were able to reprogram skin cells to become vascular cells in severely injured legs that lacked blood flow. Active blood vessels appeared within one week and the legs were saved within two weeks. Clinical trials are expected to begin next year to test the technology in humans.

  • Scientists Develop DNA Test To Find Cancer

    Researchers have developed a new way to diagnose cancer with greater accuracy before tumors are detected using imaging by instead testing for tumor cell DNA in the blood. Patients with very early stages of cancer have DNA from tumor cells circulating in their blood long before an actual tumor develops, researchers say, which may allow for earlier treatment of the disease. Tumor cell molecules can be discovered in a regular blood sample before a tumor is visible via imaging such as tomography, X-ray, ultrasound or MRI.
