The global economic crisis will not be quite as grim as feared this year, but GDP will still contract 4.4 percent, the IMF says in its latest World Economic Outlook. "This upgrade owes to somewhat less dire outcomes in the second quarter, as well as signs of a stronger recovery in the third quarter, offset partially by downgrades in some emerging and developing economies," IMF chief economist Gita Gopinath says. Optimism that new vaccines will bring the pandemic under control and allow economic activity to resume coupled with stimulus in major economies has boosted the growth forecast this year to 5.5 percent, the IMF says in its latest World Economic Outlook. SOUNDBITE
"We are projecting global growth in 2020 to fall to minus three percent," the International Monetary Fund's chief economist Gita Gopinath says, as the coronavirus pandemic pushes the global economy into a deep recession. SOUNDBITE
The OECD trims its 2020 global economic growth forecast and says it does not see a strong rebound in 2021 owing to risks stemming from trade tensions. SOUNDBITE
The International Monetary Fund slightly lowers its outlook for the global economy, predicting the global economy will grow by 2.8 percent this year and three percent in 2024, a decline of 0.1 percentage point from its previous forecasts in January. SOUNDBITE
