General Motors gained as much as 8.9% to a record high on Tuesday. The gain comes on news that its autonomous vehicle subsidiary, Cruise, is receiving a large investment from Microsoft. Microsoft joins a number of companies in a $2 billion funding round for Cruise. Tuesday's price is a record-high for GM since it emerged from bankruptcy at the end of the Great Recession. The partnership will accelerate the commercialization of self-driving vehicles. It brings together the two companies' software and hardware engineering expertise, cloud computing capabilities, and manufacturing knowledge.
Kids that live in poor neighborhoods don't do as well on cognitive function tests as those who live in higher-income areas. An analysis published Tuesday by JAMA also showed that lower-income children have lower "brain volume". According to UPI, higher household income was associated with improved vocabulary, reading skills, and memory. Researchers note the differences are likely due to kids in higher-income homes had more developed prefrontal and hippocampal brain regions. The prefrontal cortex has been linked with behavior, personality, and decision making. While the hippocampus is believed to be involved in learning and memory skills.
After much ado about mutable microphones and plexiglass shields, President Donald Trump will face opponent Joe Biden on Thursday. CNN reports Trump needs to not just perform well at the presidential debate, he'll need to pull a rabbit out of the hat to swing the race his way. The president trails Biden in both national polls and key swing states that will determine whether he has a path to victory in the Electoral College. Both candidates need to improve their standing with certain groups, though. Biden needs more Hispanic voters, and Trump is struggling to get White suburban women. Biden has been laying low recently, preparing for the event. Trump, meanwhile has been barnstorming across the country in full gripe-and-moan mode. The president spends his rallies insulting scientists and refusing any responsibility for the pandemic, which has created a huge drag on his poll numbers.
