The United States criticizes Israel's far-right national security minister for leading prayers at the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound, saying he has hurt efforts for talks toward a Gaza ceasefire. "Not only is it unacceptable, it detracts from what we think is a vital time, as we are working to get this ceasefire deal across the finish line," State Department spokesman Vedant Patel tells reporters. World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus calls an "emergency" meeting of international representatives to discuss the spread of the mpox virus. With mpox spreading outside of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tedros adds that the WHO emergency committee would meet "as soon as possible" to advise him on "whether the outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern". US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urges Middle East rivals to agree to a Gaza ceasefire to "break this cycle" of violence, urging de-escalation as Iran prepares a potential strike on Israel.
